SPLC Action Statement on House Oversight Hearing on Policing Practices and Law Enforcement Accountability

Washington, DC. — SPLC Action President and CEO Margaret Huang released the below statement ahead of today’s U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary hearing on Policing Practices and Law Enforcement:

“Our nation’s policing system is irreparably broken. It is long overdue that we begin to imagine a different system —  one that would dismantle the foundation of white supremacy and racism and would lift up the needs and values of the communities served. SPLC has worked to combat violent extremism and white supremacy for decades, including when it is done by agents of the government. No more Black lives should be taken, and no one else should ever have to grieve for someone killed by a police officer.

“Today’s hearing is a critical step to advancing long overdue changes to our policing system. Congress must stop the violent extremism and lack of accountability in our nation’s law enforcement agencies. We urge Congress to take meaningful action to stop the killings of Black people by police.”
