SPLC ACTION STATEMENT ON CAPITOL HILL INCIDENT

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Following the incident on Capitol Hill today, Seth Levi, Chief Strategy Officer of the SPLC Action Fund, released the following statement:

“We are all grateful that today’s incident was peacefully resolved. However, today should serve as an important reminder to us all of the perilous situation created by the continuous stream of hateful rhetoric and disinformation spread and promoted by elected officials and others in power. 

“While we have always had extremism in this country, we have not always had members of Congress who themselves spread such dangerous lies and openly incite violence. We do now. Even in the aftermath of potential widespread violence, those like Rep. Mo Brooks continue to stoke the fires of fear. 

“Unless there are real consequences for these public officials, this will only continue and grow far worse for our nation and democracy."
