SPLC Action Fund Congratulates Shomari Figures for Historic Win in Alabama’s Congressional District 2
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Today, the SPLC Action Fund celebrates with voters in Congressional District 2 (AL-02) for electing Shomari Figures to the United States House of Representatives. The newly drawn district will have its first Black representative, with strong roots in the community and a commitment to moving the state forward.
“Following years of gerrymandering, the election of Shomari Figures is a victory for Black voters in Congressional District 2,” said Brandon Jones, director of political campaigns, SPLC Action Fund. “Shomari Figures believes in expanding Medicaid, investing in education, growing Alabama’s workforce, and ending the gun violence epidemic. Alabamians in the 2nd district now have an elected official who truly represents their values.”
Figures has worked in all three branches of the federal government. At the start of his political career, the Alabama native served in the Obama Administration as Domestic Director of Presidential Personnel. Then he went on to hold other federal positions including White House liaison at the Department of Justice, a counsel in Congress, and deputy chief of staff and counselor to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. No matter the position, he has remained loyal to his fellow Alabamians.
The Action Fund endorsed Figures during the 2024 election cycle. An Action Fund poll, released in October, showed significant enthusiasm for the Democratic ticket, including a double-digit lead for Figures in the AL-02 race.
