Anti-Immigrant Proposals Would Undermine the System — Not Reform It
WASHINGTON — In letters to Congress and the Biden administration, SPLC Action Fund urged both to reject harsh anti-immigrant measures proposed as part of the supplemental appropriations negotiations. The proposals now being considered are more extreme than most of the Trump administration’s policies and would seriously damage the nation’s asylum system. The letters are available here and here.
“As negotiations continue, we call on Congress and the White House to reject any supplemental spending deal that compromises core American values by limiting access to asylum or humanitarian parole, eliminating important safeguards protecting migrant children, or requiring mandatory detention of people seeking asylum,” said Efrén C. Olivares, Deputy Legal Director for Immigrant Justice with the SPLC Action Fund.
“The U.S. immigration system needs reform, but not like this. Lawmakers should not use people seeking asylum, including vulnerable children, as pawns in a spending negotiation, and we should not adopt sweeping changes in a rushed deal that does not adequately consider the profound implications for our immigration laws. Congress and the White House must stand firm and reject any attempts to permanently change immigration law through the supplemental spending bill,” said Olivares.

Las Propuestas Anti-inmigrantes Debilitarían el Sistema, no lo Reformarían
WASHINGTON — En cartas al Congreso y a la administración Biden, el SPLC Action Fund (Fondo de Acción del Southern Poverty Law Center - SPLC por sus siglas en inglés) instó a ambos a rechazar las duras medidas antiinmigrantes propuestas como parte de las negociaciones de asignaciones suplementarias. Las propuestas que ahora se consideran son más extremas que la mayoría de las políticas de la administración Trump y dañarían gravemente el sistema de asilo del país. “Mientras continúan las negociaciones, pedimos al Congreso y a la Casa Blanca que rechacen cualquier acuerdo de gasto suplementario que comprometa los valores fundamentales estadounidenses al limitar el acceso al asilo o la libertad condicional humanitaria, eliminar salvaguardias importantes que protegen a los niños migrantes o exigir la detención obligatoria de las personas que buscan asilo”, dijo Efrén C. Olivares, Director Legal Adjunto de Justicia para Inmigrantes del SPLC Action Fund.
